MANtrio

MANtrio is an improvising trio with Sage Romey (piano), Sarah Yates (bass) and Melanie Sehman (drums/percussion) that uses the standard trio format as a laboratory for exploration, performing improvised music and original creative work. Bridging contemporary art music, avant-garde jazz and free improvisation, their music centers on a collaborative creative process rooted in improvisation and radical listening. Adept at crafting musical realms ranging from intricate and crystalline to densely tangled and idiosyncratic, they draw source material from jazz and black American music traditions, contemporary, experimental and medieval musics, visual art, literature and poetry, mysticism, symbolism and mythology, as well as mining their experiences as women. By being present and listening to each other with curiosity instead of expectation, the music they create is honest and unfiltered.

Past engagements include ensemble in residence at the Camphill Kimberton (PA) Chamber Music Residency program, the nationally-acclaimed Racer Sessions (Seattle), Wayward in Limbo series (Seattle) and the Bellingham Alternative Library.
